A comprehensive review of the functionality of specific and essential fatty acids, their role for energy supply during growth and development, their relation to health outcomes for special subgroups as well as safety aspects of some food sources of fats. During the first 6 months of life, dietary total fat should contribute 40–60 %E (% of total energy) to cover the energy needed for growth and the fat required for tissue deposition.
 
Dietary fat and coronary heart disease
 
A summary of the evidence from cohort studies and randomised controlled trials of the relation between dietary fat and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The ultimate aim is to assist the expert consultation group to make evidence-based recommendations about fat, fatty acids and human health.
 
Inconclusive evidence that dietary fat intake effects weight or diabetes
 
There is inconclusive evidence of any relationship between dietary fat intake and body weight or diabetes.
